In the upper painting, we can see only one colour by hue - blue - which is graded in many shades.

 

Dimming the blue colour into dark shades:

The brown colour develops by dimming the orange or red colours.
                   
                   
Consequently, the brown is not a colour but a shade. It doesn´t appear in the rainbow, but develops by adding the black colour to the colour.
By adding the black colour, the colour becomes darker; by adding the white colour, the colour becomes brighter. The brightness of the colour is referred to as lightness.
